Arbitrator Rules in MGEU's Favour on HCSS Part-Time Vacation Entitlement

In December, an arbitration was held on the issue of vacation for part-time employees in Health Care Support Services. The MGEU is pleased to announce that the arbitrator’s decision, which was handed down today, upheld the MGEU’s position in its entirety.
Arbitrator Awards Tenant Service Coordinators Significant Retroactive Increase

Twelve Tenant Service Coordinators who work for the Manitoba Department of Housing sought a reclassification of their jobs based on a significant change to their duties. The changes had come about in 2004 and 2005. The Union and government had negotiated for a long time to determine an appropriate wage rate, however, the matter could not be settled between the parties and was sent to arbitration.
Compensation for Travel Time Grievance Finally Determined

All participating Corrections employees are being asked to meet at the Winnipeg Convention Centre at 11am. We will be moving to the steps of the Manitoba Legislature along a predetermined route from there.
Manitoba Correctional Officers Blindsided by Government

The legal team representing the Province of Manitoba, and representatives of the Manitoba Government and General Employees’ Union (MGEU), were to begin an arbitration hearing this week to finally resolve an impasse involving a contract for Provincial Correctional Officers that has been in negotiations for over two years. Instead, Provincial lawyers informed MGEU late last week that they were using a technical legal maneuver to block the start of proceedings and further delay getting a contract for Manitoba’s 1,100 Corrections Officers.

The Corrections Arbitration hearing has been postponed. The province and the Attorney General’s office have raised a last minute preliminary argument that has to be dealt with before the arbitration can proceed.
Province Refuses to Pay Overtime for Travel Time

In August of 2006, the MGEU won an arbitration that required the government to pay employees at overtime rates for travel. Since that date, the Union has made repeated requests to the government to pay employees who should be compensated as a result of that Award. The MGEU had to return to the Arbitrator to hear arguments that the government was making in an attempt to limit the number of people who would receive a remedy. They were unsuccessful in this attempt.

In a recent arbitration decision, Arbitrator Riley ruled that it was unfair for the government to withhold sick leave benefits to a person who provided medical notes to the employer confirming an illness.
