Member Scholarships & Bursaries

MGEU MEMBER BURSARIES
Each year, the MGEU awards eight bursaries for $1,000 (one per area). Any registered, dues-paying member, or spouse of a member, or child or ward of a member, is eligible.

THE PETER OLFERT SCHOLARSHIP ($2,000) is available to an individual studying in a field that potentially impacts public policy (i.e. legislation, programs and services) including, but not restricted to, workplace safety and health, the environment, human rights, community economic development and the role of government and the public sector. Any registered, dues-paying member, or spouse of a member, or child or ward of a member, is eligible.

THE JOSEPH GRENIER BURSARY is available to any registered, dues-paying MGEU member of the Healthcare Support Services component, spouse of a Facility Support member, or child or ward of a Facility Support member. The exact amount of this bursary varies from year to year depending on the annual interest earned by a trust fund established in honour of Joseph Grenier.

NUPGE POST-SECONDARY SCHOLARSHIPS
Each year, the
National Union of Public and General Employees sponsors a number of
scholarships for children of NUPGE members throughout the country. As an affiliate, all MGEU members are members of NUPGE.
The deadline for each NUPGE scholarship is June 30th of every year.
The Tommy Douglas Scholarship for $1,500 is open to all students who plan to enter the first year of a Canadian public post-secondary education institution full-time in 2011-2012 and who are the children of, or foster children of, a National Union of Public and General Employees member. It will be awarded for the best 750-1,000 word essay on: How Tommy Douglas contributed to making Canada a more just and equitable society

The Terry Fox Memorial Scholarship for $1,500 is open to all students with disabilities who plan to enter the first year of a Canadian public post-secondary education institution full-time in 2011-2012 and who are the children of, or foster children of, a member of the National Union of Public and General Employees. It will be awarded for the best 750-1,000 word essay on: The importance of quality public services in enhancing the quality of life of people with disabilities.
The Scholarship for Aboriginal Canadians for $1,500 is open to all Aboriginal Canadian students who plan to enter the first year of a Canadian public post-secondary education institution full-time in 2011-2012 and who are the children of, or foster children of, a National Union of Public and General Employees member. It will be awarded for the best 750-1,000 word essay on: The importance of quality public services in enhancing the quality of life of Aboriginal Canadians
The Scholarship for Visible Minorities for $1,500 is open to all visible minority students who plan to enter the first year of a Canadian public post-secondary education full-time in 2011-2012 and who are the children of, or foster children of, a National Union of Public and General Employees member. It will be awarded for the best 750-1,000 word essay on: The importance of quality public services in enhancing the quality of life of visible minorities.
