Westman Lab Votes to Strike

Last week, employees at Westman Regional Laboratory in Brandon voted to reject the last contract offer from Diagnostic Services Manitoba (DSM) and have voted in favour of strike action. An Essential Services Agreement must now be negotiated with their employer, which should happen this week. Terms of the collective agreement stipulate employees must then give DSM two weeks notice prior to establishing picket lines and going on strike.

Hospitals to be Billed for EMS Offload Delays

Starting this year, hospitals will be billed for delays that force ambulances to wait long periods of time to drop patients at ERs. Hospital will be billed for any wait beyond 90 minutes, which will drop to 60 minutes in October, and subsequently 30 minutes in April 2012.

Today, the Civil Service ballots were counted and the government’s revised offer was ratified by members. Fifty-six percent of Civil Service members voted and sixty-seven percent of those who cast a ballot voted to accept the offer.

Federal Government Cuts Back on Spending in 2010 Budget

Today, the Federal Government sketched out how it plans to eventually return to surplus in its 2010 budget, by identifying $17.6-billion in savings over the next five years through cut backs in the public service, and limited spending growth in the military and foreign aid. The budget reflects the smallest spending increase in a decade.

MFL Offering Free Workshop on Workplace Violence Prevention

The MFL Occupational Health Centre and Safe Communities Winnipeg is sponsoring a one-day training workshop on Workplace Violence Prevention. Topics to be covered include what is workplace violence, consequences of workplace violence on individual workers and their workplace, and risk factors for workplace violence. The workshop will explore ways to eliminate or reduce the risk of workplace violence. It's primarily designed for managers, supervisors, and members of Joint Health and Safety Committees.

ANCR Survey Results Released
