People vs. Profits - Public Safety and Community Outreach

As with any private company, the number one reason private insurance companies exist is to make money.

This means they sometimes deny coverage to drivers. In 1999, the Alberta Motor Association denied coverage to anyone living in the postal code zone of TOC 1NO, regardless of the driver, their driving record and their claims history. Manitoba Public Insurance cannot deny coverage.

This doesn’t mean public insurance companies don’t have a responsibility to keep costs down, and in turn, keep rates low, for drivers. In fact, they are regulated by the Public Utilities Board to keep rates in line.

As a public company they also take a much more active role in public safety initiatives, such as safe driving campaigns, driver education programs, road safety demonstrations and vehicle safety checks, while investing in community events and initiatives.

Here in Manitoba, MPI delivers or supports more than twenty-five safety/community initiatives including Child Car seat / RoadWatch Checks, Safety Services Manitoba, “Safe Ride Home” programs, Safe Grad, and Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
