Shauntana Holmes: Family Support Supervisor

Shauntana Holmes

Quote

Families are that much more committed to meaningful change when they see that the work my colleagues and I do isn't just a job - it's a passion.

Local 383

Shauntana Holmes is a Family Support Supervisor for Metis Child and Family Services (CFS) in Winnipeg. In her daily duties she supervises Family Support Workers and their day to day work with the Metis community in Manitoba.

She works with Metis families who are struggling with adequately caring for their children due to issues such as mental health, addictions, poverty, and generational trauma, and helps provide support to them. This can take the form of parent education or of connecting them with a variety of resources in the community, such as food banks, counselling, support groups, and respite.

Shauntana also spends a good part of her day supervising family access. This can be mandated as a result of court orders, safety concerns, or as an educational means to hand over hand educate the caregivers/parents on ensuring children are getting meaningful time with them.

As a supervisor for Family Support she works on ensuring families are paired with a family support worker that will best meet their needs. She also ensures that she is known to the families of her support workers as much as possible to ensure that these families know they have a network of support behind them. Shauntana believes that families are that much more committed to making meaningful changes when they realize that for her and her colleagues the work they do is not just a job, but a passion.

Shauntana is currently the union President for Metis CFS (Local 383) , a position she’s been in for just over a year now. She believes that it’s important to have members, the union and management all working together to create a positive and safe work environment. She hopes that over time members will be better able to achieve their full potential in their workplace knowing that they have these supports.
