Valdine Flaming: Academic Resource Officer

Valdine Flaming

Quote

In many cases the students we’re helping are navigating their disabilities independently for the first time in their lives. So we’re helping and supporting them on their academic journey.

Local 70

Valdine Flaming is an Academic Resource Officer at the University College of the North (UCN) campus in Thompson and an MGEU steward for UCN Local 70.

In her job, Valdine advocates for students with disabilities and chronic illness. She also works closely with the Thompson campus student council to organize student events which promote awareness and inclusiveness to enrich the academic experience for all students.

She also works within UCN’s numerous databases and program templates to deliver university and college programs to multiple locations throughout the north. The database and software intricacies involved with class scheduling gives Valdine many technical challenges in her regular workload.

“In many cases the students we’re helping are navigating their disabilities independently for the first time in their lives. So we’re helping and supporting them on their academic journey.”

UCN’s integrated college and university approach provides more post-secondary education options for northern students. Valdine says UCN also provides a unique student experience from what you’d typically see in many universities or colleges.

“Family and community are more involved in the student experience here. It’s definitely unique to the north and it’s one of the reasons it’s a great fit for me.”

As a Red River Metis Saulteaux woman living with an episodic disability, Valdine says she’s well suited to her role. Her favourite part of the job is making a difference in the lives of northern students and the pride she feels in empowering student leaders and helping them grow.

Valdine has served her Local as a steward and health and safety representative, while representing her fellow members on the MGEU’s Area 8 Council, Equality and Human Rights Committee, Young Members Committee, and Finance Committee.
