The Paramedic Association of Manitoba (PAM) has filed an application to designate paramedics as a health profession under the Regulated Health Professions Act. If approved, this would result in the formation of a College to self-regulate paramedics in Manitoba.

The MGEU has written to the Advisory Council in support of PAM’s right to apply and be heard on this issue and a public meeting on this issue will take place at 7pm on May 23rd, 2013 at the Winnipeg Convention Centre (375 York Avenue).

After consulting with MGEU elected representatives for paramedics across the province, the MGEU decided to make a presentation on behalf of paramedics in support of PAM’s application for self regulation. The decision to speak in support of the application also takes into account broad support for this position expressed to MGEU representatives during the province-wide consultations the union undertook during the lead-up to the Provincial EMS Review.

The MGEU is encouraging all paramedics from across Manitoba to come to Winnipeg to attend the hearings at the Winnipeg Convention Centre on May 23rd, 2013.

A strong showing from Paramedics, in uniform, at the public meeting will send a clear message from the paramedics community that the time has come for Paramedicine to be more fully recognized as a profession and that members of the paramedic profession, based on their knowledge, skills and judgment, are best suited to govern their own profession in the public interest.
