From March 10 -12, Nelson McIntyre Collegiate in Winnipeg presents Marc Blitzstein’s The Cradle Will Rock. This thought-provoking musical from 1937 addresses a number of social issues including corruption, corporate greed, and strike breaking in the 1930s.

The original musical nearly closed before it opened when the production was shut down due to "budget cuts" within the Federal Theatre Project—though it was widely believed that this was instead because of accusations that it was pro-communist. The theatre was padlocked and surrounded by armed servicemen in a shocking display of government censorship.

The Cradle Will Rock was a remarkable bit of theatre for its day and many of the themes are still relevant today. As a supporting organization of the production, the MGEU encourages members to support a local high school and watch a piece of the labour movement’s history.
