After going more than a year and a half without a new contract, MGEU members of Local 911 (Paramedics of Winnipeg) recently received a general wage increase through arbitration.

The arbitration decision reaffirms the principles outlined in three previous arbitrations: Winnipeg Paramedics should continue to track the general pay increases received by Winnipeg Fire Fighters.

“It’s very important that our paramedics continue to be recognized for their vital and expanding role in our health care system,” says MGEU President Michelle Gawronsky. “The arguments our union presented translated into a strong arbitration award, so I’m very pleased for our members of Local 911.”

The union was also able to secure additional health benefits for members through the arbitration. Further details on those benefits and the ruling will be on the agenda at upcoming Local meetings to be held within the next few weeks. A summary of the arbitration ruling and meeting notices are currently being prepared, and will be mailed out shortly to Local 911 members.

MGEU representatives will be setting up meetings with the employer to discuss the timelines for providing retroactive pay to members.

Members of the Local are encouraged to update their contact information with the union to ensure they receive the latest news from their Bargaining Committee.
