Université de Saint-Boniface budget means difficult times ahead

The Pallister government’s cuts to public services just keep on coming — the Université de Saint-Boniface (USB) is the latest on the list of Manitoba’s colleges and universities significantly affected by this government’s agenda of cuts and privatization.

“To say we are disappointed that the government continues to cut funding to our province’s institutions is a gross understatement. Cutting funding and hacking and slashing the important services Manitobans count on is a shameful way to operate,” said Michelle Gawronsky, MGEU President.

While USB administration are doing their best to maintain services, the 0.9% cut in provincial funding has forced them to make cuts to most budget-line items.

As salaries comprise a large portion of their budget, the government’s funding cuts mean two of USB’s term university professors will not have their terms renewed. These members will be offered career transition services.

Four courses offered by sessional instructors will also be cut, including two university and two college courses and the university won’t fill the 2.6 vacant support positions.

USB students will also be burdened with a tuition increase to the maximum allowable amount.
