The Pallister government made it official today that they are cancelling plans to build a new jail in Dauphin. Manitoba Justice shocked employees at Dauphin Correctional Centre (DCC) this morning by informing them they will be closing the existing facility on May 29, 2020 and renovating the space to expand the courthouse instead.
MGEU President Michelle Gawronsky says the announcement is devastating news. While investments in the courthouse are encouraging, the government’s decision to downplay the closure of DCC is disappointing given the number of workers who will now be faced with a life-changing decision.
“I don’t think it’s appropriate for this government to attempt to gloss over what will ultimately result in the loss of dozens of good, family-supporting jobs for this community," Gawronsky said. "Our members deserve better. The big story here is the closure of DCC and the ripple effect that is going to have for all of these families.”
Just over 100 MGEU members work at DCC and the courthouse. The majority of workers are employed in the Correctional Centre, including 57 Correctional Officers, as well as Sheriff’s Officers, Nurses, Clerks of the Court, Probation Officers, and Social Workers.
Officials from the department told members today that they wish to keep all staff employed, but a reduction in salary may be required for those who choose to stay in Dauphin, while others will be forced to relocate to other facilities. Manitoba Justice did not provide any details about what jobs would be staying in Dauphin.
"We want to let our members know that their union is going to fight to ensure their collective agreement is respected and their rights are protected," Gawronsky said. "Right now, we've got so many questions about exactly what this all means for our members, the community of Dauphin, and our provincial correctional system -- and this government has provided few answers. We'll be working very hard to ensure our members stay as informed as possible in the days ahead."
