Bill 64, the poorly named ‘Education Modernization Act’, will bring sweeping changes to public education -- including the elimination of school boards and the removal of locally-elected voices from decision-making -- and is designed to take away Manitobans voices while laying the groundwork for further cuts to our schools.

While thousands of Manitobans have already added their voices in opposition, MGEU President, Michelle Gawronsky, says it’s important for all Manitobans to understand the stakes with Bill 64.

“This legislation takes away democratically-elected voices and replaces them with government appointees. It also interferes in collective bargaining for educators and school staff, and it’s really another example of this government’s blatant disregard for what’s best for the average Manitoban and for public education,” she said.

In response, the MGEU is asking all members, and all Manitobans, to help defend public education by standing up against Bill 64. The union has created #StopBill64 window signs to distribute for people to put up at home or at work. (Be sure to include your name and mailing address in the email.)

Manitoba School Board President, Allan Campbell, has echoed this warning about Bill 64, calling the legislation a “time-bomb.” He reminds every Manitoban to make their voices heard.

“To put it mildly, the provincial government is banking on the fact that Manitobans will ignore the uncontestable fact that their own vote and voices are about to be silenced. Given what’s at stake here, Manitobans must ensure that this scheme is not successful.”

He is calling on Manitobans to help each other understand that this Bill will affect us all, not just those with children in the education system. The legislation will directly impact students and staff, but the government will have to levy more taxes as a result of their education property tax rebates.

In the fall when the Legislature is again seated, Manitobans will need to rise to the challenge and register to present to the legislative committee on Bill 64. In the meantime, each and every Manitoban can take action today -- by getting the word out about this anti-democratic legislation and by talking about Bill 64 with their fellow Manitobans.
