At the MGEU’s 2021 Virtual Convention held in October, delegates passed a resolution to hold a Special Convention in June, 2022 to debate and vote on member resolutions.

The Special Convention has now been scheduled for June 10-11, 2022, though it has not yet been determined if it will be a virtual or in-person event. The MGEU Board of Directors will make that decision in January, taking into consideration public health rules and guidance.

All MGEU Locals will hold a meeting between December and March to pass resolutions for the Special Convention, to conduct elections to fill any vacant Convention Delegate positions and, where necessary, Local positions. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, most of these meetings will be conducted virtually, though some smaller meetings will be held in-person.

“These winter Local meetings are vital to our democracy as a union because they’re going to allow members to bring forward their ideas in the form of Convention resolutions,” said MGEU President, Kyle Ross. “It’s definitely a bit different for our union to be holding a convention in June, but the great thing about it is that it’s going to allow some of our Locals to meet and have elections for key positions that may still need to be filled,” he added.

Delegates who attended the October 2021 MGEU Convention will be automatically invited as delegates for the Special Convention. Additional delegates (or alternates) may be elected at the Local meetings if a Local has unfilled delegate positions.

Details about when each Local meeting is taking place, along with instructions on how to participate, will be sent to each member. Once a meeting is scheduled, it will also be listed on the MGEUMeetings/Events Calendar.

For Local meetings held virtually, notices will be sent 28 days prior to the meeting and voting credentials will be emailed five days before the meeting. To participate in these virtual meetings, members must provide a personal email address seven days before their scheduled meeting.

Need to provide your email address? It’s easy to do: simply go to Update Your Information to fill out the online form with a valid personal e-mail address, or reach out to the MGEU Resource Centre.
