The MGEU has donated $15,000 through the union’s Humanitarian Fund to the Canadian Red Cross to help Atlantic Canadians recover from Hurricane Fiona.

“Across the country, we have seen the devastation and hardship that our fellow Canadians continue to endure from this terrible storm, which damaged and washed away so many homes and livelihoods,” said MGEU President, Kyle Ross. “We want our friends in Atlantic Canada to know that we’re here for them. There is still so much more support that is needed, but we wanted to provide some immediate relief to the many challenges they’re facing.”

In addition to the Humanitarian Fund donation, the MGEU’s National Union (NUPGE) has also contributed $50,000 to the Red Cross to help with the emergency response in the region. Members from across the country are encouraged to make a personal donation at redcross.ca or by calling 1-800-418-1111 -- the Government of Canada is currently matching donations until October 23, 2022.

About the MGEU’s Humanitarian Fund

The MGEU’s Humanitarian Fund was established to support domestic and international anti-poverty and disaster-relief projects.

In recent years, the fund has also supported families displaced by the wildfires in Fort McMurray, typhoon relief efforts in the Philippines, and humanitarian aid in Ukraine.
