As part of Canada Road Safety Week (May 16-22), the 2023 SAFE Roads spring campaign officially launched in Manitoba today to prompt motorists to reduce their speed and drive with extra caution in construction zones and at emergency scenes.

The theme for this year’s campaign – They’re Not in Your Way, They’re at Work – reminds motorists to slow down so road workers can work safely. It was created to increase awareness over the summer months through social media posts, radio ads, transit ads, and billboards.

As a long-time partner of the annual campaign, the MGEU represents hundreds of provincial workers, as well as Winnipeg paramedics who work on or near our roadways. President Kyle Ross says it is up to all motorists to ensure these workers stay as safe as possible on the job by avoiding distractions at the wheel and slowing down.

“Our streets and highways are home to thousands of Manitobans who are just trying to do their jobs,” said Ross. “This important campaign is here to remind us that we need to respect their lives and their livelihoods, so that everyone can return home safely after their shift."
