MGEU's Melissa Dvorak elected Winnipeg Labour Council President
Last night, the Winnipeg Labour Council held elections for positions on its executive. Melissa Dvorak, an MGEU activist out of Macdonald Youth Services, was elected President. With Dvorak’s election in Winnipeg, MGEU members now hold the position of Labour Council president in Brandon (Kirk Carr), Portage (Ed Miller), and Selkirk (Susan Smerchanski). MGEU members Liz Dodds and Jesse McNeil also serve as the elected are representatives from The Pas and Southeast on the Manitoba Federation of Labour Executive Council.

More tax cuts, vague buzz words not enough to protect the services Manitobans deserve
Today’s Throne speech was full of buzz words — progress on a public service “Transformation Strategy,” establishment of a health care “Front-Line Idea Fund,” improving “procurement processes” at Crown corporations, agencies and boards — but no concrete plan to preserve the vital services Manitobans rely on day-in and day-out.

In the wake of two violent attacks to Correctional Officers in the past two weeks, MGEU President, Michelle Gawronsky, is calling on Manitoba Justice to initiate immediate health and safety reviews in all Correctional facilities.

Privatizing highway snow clearing will put public safety at risk: Gawronsky
The government’s privatization push on highway snow clearing moved forward last week, when they quietly posted several requests for proposals from private contractors to bid on snow clearing services for the 2019/2020 season. President Gawronsky says that the Province should look to the experiences in Ontario to see how privatization could put public safety at risk.

MGEU Member Survey to Begin November 13
Starting November 13 (for the next 2-3 weeks), the MGEU will be undertaking the annual survey of its membership to determine members’ attitudes on a number of crucial issues facing those in the public sector. Any member of the MGEU that is asked to participate will be contacted by phone and information collected for the survey will be kept personal and anonymous.

Members of Rod McGillvary Memorial Care Home - Local 447 in The Pas have ratified their first collective agreement.
