MGEU COVID-19 Update #9: April 24, 2020 - MGEU Convention, Meetings and Events
Today, we are updating our plan for upcoming meetings and events in accordance with the latest information from public health officials. Adjustments to regular meeting practices are being made to protect members and staff, and to fulfill our responsibility to limit and slow the spread of the virus in our communities.

Day of Mourning Event goes Virtual for 2020
Even though we’re apart, we can still be together to mark this important day. The MFL is rescheduling this year's Day of Mourning ceremony to be a Facebook Live event. Tune in to https://www.facebook.com/ManitobaLabour at 11 am on Tuesday, April 28 for the virtual ceremony as we mourn the dead – fight for the living.

Threatening memo shows Premier determined to impose cuts
Members who provide Manitoba's public services received a memo this morning from the Deputy Secretary of Cabinet and the Civil Service Commissioner, notifying members that “layoff notices may be issued while discussions continue and options continue to be explored.”

MGEU President writes to Premier, demands more info re: layoff threats
In response to Premier Pallister’s announcement earlier this week that his government plans to reduce the workweek for some provincial employees, MGEU President Michelle Gawronsky wrote to the Premier today, arguing that public employees are going to need more time and a lot more information before any decisions can be made.

Judge rules Province must appoint arbitration panel, calls government’s case for refusal “disingenuous at best”
Today, the Court of Queen’s Bench ruled that the MGEU was entirely justified in seeking arbitration on behalf of Civil Service members. In her ruling, Judge Keyser sided firmly with the union and directed Finance Minister Scott Fielding to appoint an arbitration panel as clearly outlined in the Civil Service Act.

MGEU COVID-19 Update #8: April 14, 2020 - Premier looking at public service lay offs
Today, on short notice, the provincial government invited MGEU and other public sector unions to a meeting about "the financial and workforce sustainability implications of COVID-19" as they are looking at layoffs for those who deliver so-called "non-essential" public services.
