Government closing Manitoba Curriculum Support Centre
Mar 15, 2019
In a disheartening trend, the Pallister government is closing yet another important provincial institution - the Manitoba Curriculum Support Centre.
The MGEU is deeply concerned about the decision, which will see the centre at 1181 Portage Avenue in Winnipeg closed in less than three weeks (April 1, 2019).
“Our members working here are feeling an immense sense of loss. Many of them have been working in the library for 30-plus years and care deeply for the patrons of the centre,” said Michelle Gawronsky, MGEU President. “Once again the government is making sweeping changes without any regard for the people who use these services, or the people who deliver them.”
The Manitoba Curriculum Support Centre, which supports teachers across the province, as well as those who choose to home school their children, employs over a dozen MGEU members.
“Although these MGEU members will be reassigned to other positions within the department, it’s simply another instance where the current government is creating a culture of fear and uncertainty, leaving our members wondering where the next cut will be,” Gawronsky said.
