The legalization of non-medical marijuana is coming to Canada and each province is preparing their regulatory framework for how it will be sold.

With that in mind, the MGEU has released a new position paper about the sale of non-medical marijuana here in Manitoba.

Marijuana Legalization in Manitoba - The MGEU Perspective urges the Manitoba Government to proceed with a public model administered and operated by Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries, citing that the crown corporation “has the expertise, capacity and a proven track-record selling a controlled product in a socially responsible way.”

Research shows there are potential health risks associated with the free-flowing unrestricted usage of marijuana, especially for young Manitobans. In the paper, the MGEU calls on the government to mitigate these risks by choosing a public model that ensures safe sales, an impaired driving strategy, improved treatment options, public education, good family-supporting jobs and quality service.
