The Corrections Arbitration hearing has been postponed. The province and the Attorney General’s office have raised a last minute preliminary argument that has to be dealt with before the arbitration can proceed.

They have involved the Attorney General’s Office, which is now asking for standing at the arbitration in order to oppose our pension proposals on the grounds that we are not allowed to negotiate pensions. It is their position that to get an arbitrator to rule on pensions would raise constitutional issues, which the Attorney General would like to respond to in the arbitration.

The MGEU bargaining committee is meeting with the union’s lawyers on Monday morning to discuss what next steps should be taken. Any decisions made at that meeting will be forwarded on to the membership.
