The MGEU’s Corrections Bargaining Committee and representatives from the Provincial Government will resume contract negotiations on Thursday, January 24, and Friday, January 25, 2008.

There remain nine items outstanding that were scheduled to go to arbitration last month, but the government had delayed those proceedings by claiming there were constitutional issues that needed to be resolved first (involving the Attorneys General of Manitoba and Canada).

After a boisterous protest march to the Legislature by some 300 Correctional Officers, the government has lived up to its word that it would get back to the bargaining table to try and make progress on the outstanding issues.

Correctional Officers should be aware and understand that simply going back to the table to resume negotiations does not necessarily mean that the nine remaining issues will be resolved. It’s a positive sign, though, that the sides are talking again.

Arbitration dates that had been identified prior to the government’s legal stunt are still in place should the scheduled negotiations not produce satisfactory results. If results are achieved on some of the issues, the length of time it will take in arbitration should be reduced.

Any questions should be directed to our Resource Centre at 1-866-982-6438. Any developments will be posted on the MGEU website.
