Scholarships and Bursaries
MGEU Post-Secondary Scholarships and Bursaries
NOTE: The 2021 MGEU Scholarships and Bursaries will be posted here when available. See below for more information about the 2020 Scholarships and Bursaries.
AREA BURSARIES ($1,500 each)
The Manitoba Government and General Employees’ Union awards sixteen
bursaries annually based on financial need. Two bursaries will be available in
each of the MGEU’s eight geographically defined Areas: one $1,500 bursary for
an MGEU member and one $1,500 for a family-member of an MGEU member.
THE KEN HILDAHL MEMORIAL AWARD ($2,000)
The Ken Hildahl Memorial Award will be awarded annually to enable an active member (dues paying, in good standing with a signed membership application as of May 15th of the current year) to attend a seminar, course or conference in order to further their knowledge in worker pension governance issues.
THE PETER OLFERT SCHOLARSHIP ($2,000)
The Peter Olfert Scholarship is available to an individual studying in a field that potentially impacts public
policy (i.e. legislation, programs and services) including, but not restricted to, workplace safety and health, the environment, human rights, community economic development and the role of government and the public sector. Any registered, dues-paying member, or spouse of a member, or child or ward of a member, is eligible.
THE JOSEPH GRENIER BURSARY
The Manitoba Government and General Employees’ Union (MGEU) has established a $1,500 bursary in honour of Joseph Grenier, a past member of the Health Care Support Services (HCSS) Component. The bursary is available to a MGEU member of the HCSS Component or their spouse/common-law partner or child (or minor under their care). Eligible applicants must be pursuing a healthcare-related profession. Selection is based on financial need.
MFL Post-Secondary Scholarships
AL CERILLI SCHOLARSHIP
The Al and Alma Cerilli Manitoba Federation of Labour Scholarship is presented annually by the MFL Young Members Committee to a member of an MFL affiliated union to be used towards their continuing education or post-secondary program. The scholarship is intended to encourage activism in the labour movement. The MGEU is a member of the MFL, therefore MGEU members are eligible to apply.

NUPGE Post-Secondary Scholarships
Each year, the National Union of Public and General Employees offers a number of scholarships for NUPGE member families throughout the country. As an affiliate, all MGEU members are members of NUPGE. The 2021 applictions are not yet available. See below for more information about the 2020 scholarships.
NEW FOR 2020 - Young Worker Scholarship
Two $2,500 scholarships awarded to those under the age of 30 (as of the application deadline) who plan to enter full-time studies at a Canadian public post-secondary education institution and are the children/grandchildren or foster children/grandchildren of a NUPGE member. It is awarded for the two best 750-1,000 word essays that answer the question: In what ways are unions still important in the contemporary workplace?
The Tommy Douglas Scholarship
This $2,500 scholarship is open to all students who plan to enter their first year of full-time studies at a Canadian public post-secondary education institution and who are the children/grandchildren or foster children/grandchildren of a NUPGE member. It is awarded for the best 750-1,000 word essay on: How Tommy Douglas contributed to making Canada a more just and equitable society.
The Terry Fox Memorial Scholarship
This $2,500 scholarship is open to all students who identify a disability, plan to enter their first year of full-time studies at a Canadian public post-secondary education institution, and are the children/grandchildren or foster children/grandchildren of a NUPGE member. It will be awarded for the best 750-1,000 word essay on: The importance of quality public services in enhancing the quality of life of people with disabilities.
Scholarship for Indigenous Students
This $2,500 scholarship is open to all students who identify as Indigenous, plan to enter their first year of full-time studies at a Canadian public post-secondary education institution, and are the children/grandchildren or foster children/grandchildren of a NUPGE member. It will be awarded for the best 750-1,000 word essay on: The importance of quality public services in enhancing the quality of life of Indigenous Canadians.
Scholarship for LGBTQI2S Students
This $2,500 scholarship is open to all students who identify as LGBTQI2S, plan to enter their first year of full-time studies at a Canadian
public post-secondary education institution, and are the
children/grandchildren or foster children/grandchildren of a NUPGE
member. It will be awarded for the best 750-1,000 word essay on: The importance of trade unions in supporting the LGBTQI2S community.
Scholarship for Students of Colour
This $2,500 scholarship is open to all students who identify as a person of colour, plan to enter their first year of full-time studies at a Canadian public post-secondary education institution, and are the children/grandchildren or foster children/grandchildren of a NUPGE member. It will be awarded for the best 750-1,000 word essay on: The importance of quality public services in enhancing the quality of life of people of colour in Canada.
The Brian Fudge Memorial Scholarship
This $2,500 scholarship is open to all students who plan to enter their first year of full-time studies at a Canadian public post-secondary education institution and who are the children/grandchildren or foster children/grandchildren of a NUPGE member. It is awarded for the best 750-1,000 word essay on: The importance of their field of study in either policing, criminal justice, community services or health care in delivering public services to Canadians.
Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) Post-Secondary Scholarship
As an affiliated union of the CLC, this $2500 scholarship is available to MGEU members and child/dependents of MGEU members. It is offered to young activists who are starting their first year of full-time post-secondary study in September. The applicant must be under 30 years of age.
