Scholarships and Bursaries
MGEU Post-Secondary Scholarships and Bursaries
MGEU Scholarship and Bursary applications are made available by the end of February and are due May 15 each year.
2023 AREA BURSARIES - Apply Now ($1,500 each)
The Manitoba Government and General Employees’ Union awards sixteen
bursaries annually based on financial need.
Two bursaries will be available in each of the MGEU’s eight geographically-defined Areas: one $1,500 bursary for an MGEU member; and one $1,500 bursary for a family-member of an MGEU member.

THE 2023 KEN HILDAHL MEMORIAL AWARD - Apply Now ($2,000)
The Ken Hildahl Memorial Award will be awarded annually to enable an active member (dues paying, in good standing with a signed membership application as of May 15th of the current year) to attend a seminar, course or conference in order to further their knowledge in worker pension governance issues.
THE 2023 PETER OLFERT SCHOLARSHIP - Apply Now ($2,000)
The Peter Olfert Scholarship is available to an individual studying in a field that potentially impacts public policy (i.e. legislation, programs and services) including, but not restricted to, workplace safety and health, the environment, human rights, community economic development and the role of government and the public sector. Any registered, dues-paying member, or spouse of a member, or child or ward of a member, is eligible.
THE 2023 JOSEPH GRENIER BURSARY - Apply Now ($1,500)
The MGEU has established this bursary in honour of Joseph Grenier, a past member of the
Health Care Support Services (HCSS) Component. The bursary is available to a member of the MGEU's HCSS Component or their spouse/common-law partner or child
(or minor under their care). Eligible applicants must be pursuing a
healthcare-related profession. Selection is based on financial need.

AL CERILLI SCHOLARSHIP
The MFL is proud to offer the Al and Alma Cerilli Scholarship to assist union members pursuing post-secondary education.
The application for this scholarship is available each spring.
NUPGE Post-Secondary Scholarships
Each year, the National Union of Public and General Employees offers a number of scholarships for NUPGE member families throughout the country. As an affiliate, all MGEU members are members of NUPGE.
Online applications for these scholarships are available each spring for the following school year.
Scholarship for Black Students
This scholarship is for Black students who are planning to enter the first, full-time year of a Canadian public, post-secondary education program and are children/grandchildren or foster children/grandchildren of a NUPGE member. It is awarded for the best 750-1000 word essay on the contributions of two trailblazers of African descent and how these have benefited the applicant as a person.
Young Worker Scholarship
Two $2,500 scholarships awarded to those under the age of 30 (as of the application deadline) who plan to enter full-time studies at a Canadian public post-secondary education institution and are the children/grandchildren or foster children/grandchildren of a NUPGE member. It is awarded for the two best 750-1,000 word essays that answer the question: In what ways are unions still important in the contemporary workplace?
The Tommy Douglas Scholarship
This $2,500 scholarship is open to all students who plan to enter their first year of full-time studies at a Canadian public post-secondary education institution and who are the children/grandchildren or foster children/grandchildren of a NUPGE member. It is awarded for the best 750-1,000 word essay on: How Tommy Douglas contributed to making Canada a more just and equitable society.
The Terry Fox Memorial Scholarship
This $2,500 scholarship is open to all students who identify a disability, plan to enter their first year of full-time studies at a Canadian public post-secondary education institution, and are the children/grandchildren or foster children/grandchildren of a NUPGE member. It will be awarded for the best 750-1,000 word essay on: The importance of quality public services in enhancing the quality of life of people with disabilities.
Scholarship for Indigenous Students
This $2,500 scholarship is open to all students who identify as Indigenous, plan to enter their first year of full-time studies at a Canadian public post-secondary education institution, and are the children/grandchildren or foster children/grandchildren of a NUPGE member. It will be awarded for the best 750-1,000 word essay on: The importance of quality public services in enhancing the quality of life of Indigenous Canadians.
Scholarship for LGBTQI2S Students
This $2,500 scholarship is open to all students who identify as LGBTQI2S, plan to enter their first year of full-time studies at a Canadian
public post-secondary education institution, and are the
children/grandchildren or foster children/grandchildren of a NUPGE
member. It will be awarded for the best 750-1,000 word essay on: The importance of trade unions in supporting the LGBTQI2S community.
Scholarship for Students of Colour
This $2,500 scholarship is open to all students who identify as a person of colour, plan to enter their first year of full-time studies at a Canadian public post-secondary education institution, and are the children/grandchildren or foster children/grandchildren of a NUPGE member. It will be awarded for the best 750-1,000 word essay on: The importance of quality public services in enhancing the quality of life of people of colour in Canada.
The Brian Fudge Memorial Scholarship
This $2,500 scholarship is open to all students who plan to enter their first year of full-time studies at a Canadian public post-secondary education institution and who are the children/grandchildren or foster children/grandchildren of a NUPGE member. It is awarded for the best 750-1,000 word essay on: The importance of their field of study in either policing, criminal justice, community services or health care in delivering public services to Canadians.
