The MGEU Board of Directors is proud to announce its support for Manitobans for the Arts (MB4A), as the union took its initial steps in partnering with the community organization by joining as a member.
With a mandate to improve funding, support, participation and attendance in the arts across the province, MGEU President, Kyle Ross, says the MB4A partnership is a good fit, given the number of MGEU members represented in the sector, including Winnipeg Art Gallery - Local 150, Manitoba Museum - Local 133, Manitoba Centennial Centre - Local 125, and Manitoba Arts Council - Local 444.
“The MGEU has hundreds of members who work in arts and cultural organizations, and this partnership will help us bring their voices and workplace concerns to a larger audience, including governments, businesses, and patrons of the arts,” he said. “Arts organizations need a lot of help to rebound from the difficult pandemic years, and we need people to know that a vibrant arts sector needs increased operating budgets and support to succeed.”
Beyond the union’s MB4A membership, Ross said that union staff and members will be exploring other ways to work with the community organization to promote the arts and support workers in this sector.
“Budgets in these organizations have been stagnant for years and with rising operating costs, budgets have effectively been cut,” Ross said. “We know that cultural experiences improve our quality of life and our mental health as Manitobans. So, that’s another important reason to support the arts because we have members in communities across Manitoba who deserve enriching cultural experiences,” he said.
