Earlier this year, the MGEU announced new steps the union is taking to identify and engage with members from equity-denied groups to get a more accurate picture of the union’s diversity.
Since March 2024, all current MGEU members have been invited to use the online Member Information Update form (or, in the case of new members, the revised member application form) to provide the union with their pronouns and self-identify as a member of an equity-denied group, which includes: Indigenous Workers, Workers of Colour, 2SLGBTQI+ Workers, and Workers with a disability.
The MGEU Resource Centre has also been asking members if they wish to update their member information when appropriate.
To date, over 1,200 MGEU members have self-identified as part of the union’s diversity initiative and over 3,000 have provided their pronouns.
“The goal is to ensure that every member feels seen, supported, and empowered within our union,” said MGEU President, Kyle Ross. “We firmly believe that by ensuring equitable opportunities for all, we strengthen our union and create a more vibrant and supportive community for everyone.”
Members are encouraged to update their information online at any time or call the Resource Centre at 204-982-6438 (toll-free 1-866-982-6438) to speak with a representative.
Providing this information, which will only be used for the purposes outlined within this project, is completely optional for members. MGEU’s strict data protection policies are in compliance with privacy laws, and all information collected is treated with the utmost care and confidentiality.
