In the 50 years since the inception of Winnipeg's Rainbow Resource Centre (Rainbow), there have been many celebrations and challenges within the 2SLGBTQ+ community.
One thing that has remained constant is the need for a place where 2SLGBTQ+ people and those who love them can find community and belonging.
The MGEU is proud to announce a donation of $25,000 toward Rainbow's Place of Pride 2SLGBTQ+ campus.
"With thousands of members who identify as part of the 2SLBGTQ+ community, and our continuing efforts to engage with equity-denied groups, this donation felt like the right fit for us. We're working hard to create safe and welcoming spaces for all members, so we recognize the value of what Rainbow is doing by creating with their Place of Pride campus," said Kyle Ross, MGEU President.
Place of Pride will be the first 2SLGBTQ+ campus in Canada. The project (which includes both social and economical considerations) is comprised of new spaces for counselling, programming, community, and 55+ housing at 545 Broadway, in central Winnipeg.
More than 270,000 Manitobans (including those who identify and their immediate families) consider themselves part of the 2SLGBTQ+ community.
Place of Pride takes Rainbow from 2,000 to 12,000 square feet of programming and community space. Phase 1 of the project, which created 21 units of deeply affordable housing for 2SLGBTQ+ older adults, was completed in September 2024.
Rainbow is now asking the community to invest $12 million to complete Phase 2 of Place of Pride – the programming, service and connection spaces.
