Every two years in October, the MGEU brings together delegates from across the province to set the union’s course for the next twenty-four months at Convention.

Convention 2025 took place October 23-25, 2025 in Winnipeg, where delegates accepted a number of significant constitutional resolutions to update the union’s committees and structure based on these important goals:

  • To get more members (and a greater diversity of members) more actively involved in their union;
  • To provide better support for Board of Directors decision-making; and
  • To make the most efficient use of MGEU activists’ time.

Here is a summary of the constitutional changes that were made…

Assemblies

The following MGEU Member Assemblies will be established (effective October 31, 2026):

  • Indigenous Workers Assembly
  • Workers with Disabilities Assembly
  • 2SLGBTQ+ Workers Assembly

The elected chairs of those six assemblies will be appointed to the Equity and Human Rights Committee. Effective October 31, 2026, the elected Chair of this Committee will have a seat on the Board of Directors.

The Workplace Safety & Health Committee will also be converted to an Assembly by October 31, 2026.

The Technological Change and Membership Education Standing Committees will be replaced with Special Committees and a Selection Committee process, which will give all members an opportunity to express their interest in joining an MGEU Special Committee, will be established.
