Not Just A Job Campaign Returns to Support Those Who Support Our Most Vulnerable

For those who help vulnerable Manitobans in our communities every day, it's not just a job. It’s personal. It’s connection. And it makes all the difference in people’s lives.

But these workers are not getting the support they need from the Manitoba government.

To raise the alarm about the desperate need to adequately fund our community-based social services, the Not Just A Job campaign, which kicked off a year ago in a partnership between MGEU and UFCW 832, returns with another partner: CUPE Manitoba.

Together over the next several weeks, the three unions – which represent thousands who work in community-based social services – are calling on Manitobans to remind the provincial government that it’s time to fix the under-funding problems that have translated into low pay, limited resources, and constant turnover.

“The people who provide these services do it because they love what they do, they care about their clients, and they can see the difference they’re making in people’s lives,” said MGEU President, Kyle Ross. “But so many of our members who’ve been doing this work for a long time are telling us that it’s reached a critical point – they can’t support themselves and their families on the wages they’re paid. Some have no choice but to leave the job they love, and all of that turnover creates challenges for the families who rely on them.”
