Candidates for President

Kyle Ross

kyle rossHello fellow MGEU Members,

I’m MGEU President Kyle Ross and I’m honored to let my name stand for re-election as your President.

Over the past four years, we’ve reshaped critical parts of our union. We’ve rebuilt our activist base and strengthened our strike toolbox—giving members the tools, training, and confidence to stand up for fair deals. We've proven that when we are organized and prepared, we can take on even the most difficult employers. And as the cost of living continues to rise, we need to keep building that strength together.

In the last two years, we’ve continued transforming the MGEU into a union that responds to the real, evolving needs of our members. We’ve made strides in using new technologies to connect more effectively—but there’s more work ahead. We must continue building platforms and processes that keep every member informed, involved, and empowered.

From day one, I set out to be an agent of change—and I’ve worked to shift power back into the hands of our locals. Together, we’ve shown that when members lead and act collectively, we can influence policy, win better conditions, and protect what matters. That’s what it means to be a union that leads—not follows.

If you believe in continuing this momentum and building an even stronger MGEU, I’m asking for your support and your vote.

Candidates for 1st Vice President

JP Lapointe

jp lapointeI have been an activist for a long time now. Many of you have met me along the way. I have enjoyed meeting you and hearing your concerns and ideas. I believe, deeply, in dialogue and listening to learn your perspectives. I hope to bring yours with me as a vice president of our union, to speak for and with you.

I've been a Local Vice President, a Chief Steward, a Local President, a Component Chair. Most recently, I have been honored to serve as 4th Vice President and then assumed the role of 1st Vice President this March, after our friend Cris Quon retired.

But the most important two roles I've held are Steward and Delegate. Stewards are the backbone of our movement. Helping others, sharing information and attending meetings. So many meetings.

Being a delegate to help guide and shape the direction of our union. Since I originally ran for 4th Vice President, we have had several conventions, including a special convention, Manitoba Federation of Labour, National Union of Public and General Employees, and the Canadian Labour Congress. It seems like yesterday and forever ago.

We have done a lot of work with the Civil Service, health care, Crown Corporations, and education, both post secondary and Winnipeg School Division. We still have more to do, and I will continue helping to share the load.

Thank you for volunteering to help by being delegates. I value you and your participation. See you soon.

JP Lapointe, 1st Vice President, MGEU

Candidates for 2nd Vice President

Veronica Boychuk

Veronica BoychukHi, I’m Veronica Boychuk, and I’m excited to be running for 2nd Vice President of the Manitoba Government and General Employees’ Union. I bring over 25 years of experience as a proud and active MGEU member and am passionate about fighting for fairness, equity, and the rights of all workers across Manitoba.

I’m a Social Worker with a Bachelor of Social Work degree, currently working in Mental Health within the Adult Program. Since joining the union in 1998, I recognized early on that equal rights aren't just a goal—they're a necessity. That drive led me to quickly step up as an activist and advocate, not just for myself, but for the people I work with and serve every day.

Over the years, I’ve taken every opportunity to grow as a leader and ally in the labour movement. I’ve proudly served on the Women’s, Equity & Human Rights, and Pensions & Benefits Committees. I’ve also represented my workplace as a Health and Safety Rep, Chief Steward, President of my Local, and most recently Technical Professional Component Director. In each of these roles, I’ve stayed committed to building solidarity, strengthening our collective voice, and ensuring members are heard and supported.

Originally from Pine River, I’ve called Dauphin home since high school. Outside of work, you’ll find me enjoying time with family and friends, gardening, or soaking up the outdoors.

I’m ready to bring energy, experience, and a strong voice to the role of 2nd Vice President. Let’s keep building a stronger union—together!

Kirk Carr

kirk carrMy name is Kirk Carr, and I am running for the position of 2nd Vice President of the MGEU. I’m asking for your support and your vote.

This role is responsible for overseeing the financial stewardship of our union entrusted with the careful management of members’ dues and the long-term financial health of our union while also serving as a Provincial Table Officer.

For those who may not know me, I’m a proud father to my wonderful 5 yr old daughter, Maya, and a devoted husband. I work as a HCA and have been actively involved with the MGEU for 19 yrs. For the past 8 yrs, I’ve served as President of the Brandon and District Labour Council, and for the last two, I’ve been honoured to serve as your 3rd Vice President.

While I’ve truly valued my time as 3rd VP, I believe my experience, heart, and commitment to transparency and accountability make me best suited for the role of 2nd VP.

When it comes to finances, my approach is clear: the membership always comes first. Every dollar the MGEU holds comes from our members, earned through their hard work and given in trust. That trust must never be taken lightly. Financial decisions must be made not just with today in mind, but with a long-term focus.

I bring years of service and leadership, a deep respect for our members, and a strong vision for our union’s future. I am always learning and growing for the betterment of the union.

Candidates for 3rd Vice President

Treasure Dubé

treasure-dubeI'm Treasure Dubé and I'm seeking election for 3rd Vice President.

I became a member in 2013 when my career started as a Juvenile Counsellor at the Agassiz Youth Centre in Portage la Prairie. I took on the role of Steward in 2015, beginning my journey as a worker advocate.

In 2022 I transferred to the Women’s Correctional Centre in Headingley, where I work as a Correctional Officer. My path as an Activist continued by becoming a Steward within my new local, then Member at Large, and currently serving as Vice-President and Co-Chairperson of my workplace’s Health & Safety and Joint Consultative Committees.

In addition to Local VP, I wear a few other hats, including Vice-Chairperson of the Corrections Component, Vice-Chairperson of the Membership Education Committee, and was recently elected as the Area 7 Director.  Prior to becoming Director, I was the Area 7 Chairperson.

During my decade of Union Activism I've been able to grow from the support of our educational offerings, and opportunities to participate in Organizing and Outreach Campaigns. In recent years I was trained as a Member Facilitator, and have had the ability to co-facilitate core, issue based, and Health and Safety courses. It’s extremely humbling and rewarding to share my experiences and those shared with me to develop future leaders.

Opportunities to engage, educate and empower our members are what drive me. I'd appreciate the opportunity to continue my growth as an Activist, and would be honoured to earn your vote and serve as our 3rd Vice President.

Candidates for 4th Vice President

Jordan Labarre

Jordan-labarreHello Delegates!

Let me start off by telling you all how excited and honored I am to share this experience with you. Convention is such an amazing and unique experience, and for me it was a major eye opener for the scope of our union. I have been a union activist since 2013 where I began my time as treasurer of USW Local 9338. It wasn't long before I departed USW and moved over to MBLL Local 56. During my first local meeting, I found out we hadn't had an active president in the local for years, and I immediately jumped at the opportunity.

My time as president afforded me a lot of experience, which included standing side by side with my union family during the liquor strike. I played a pivotal role as both a member of the bargaining committee and strong supporting member in the strike itself, assisting with the strike line organization and helping to coordinate the rallies throughout the summer of solidarity. This led to greater union involvement, taking roles as Area 1 Director, Young Member Committee Chair, and as a Risk and Strategy Committee member.

Near the end of 2024, the 4th Vice President position opened, and I'm proud to say that my colleagues at the board had the utmost confidence and trust in me, electing me to the position of 4th Vice President.

Thank you for participating in union democracy, know that your voice helps lead us into a stronger future.

In Solidarity,
Jordan Labarre

Annette Lyss

Annette LyssMy name is Annette Lyss, and I’m running for 4th Vice President. I believe every voice deserves to be heard—no matter how small the local. I’m committed to equity, inclusion, and ensuring that all equity-deserving groups are represented. Rural members deserve the same attention, respect, and advocacy as those in Winnipeg, and I’m focused on building truly balanced, province-wide representation.

I work as a Library Technician at Arborgate School and currently serve as President of Local 144 (SRSD Support), Area 5 Director, and Chair of the MGEU Technological Change Committee. I’ve facilitated professional development sessions for parents, educators, students, and colleagues—always with a focus on collaboration and empowerment.

My leadership experience includes serving on a wide range of committees at both the local and provincial levels. These include the Department of Education’s Special Education Review, the SRSD Community Education Committee, the MGEU Safety, Health and Environment Committee, and various scholarship and award panels—including the Lieutenant Governor’s Classroom Teacher Awards. I’ve also been involved in conference planning and advocacy through the Manitoba Council for Exceptional Children (MCEC).

Prior to taking on leadership roles within MGEU, I served as President of the Manitoba Association of Parent Councils (MAPC) and the Metro-Winnipeg Chapter of MCEC, building a strong foundation in inclusive leadership.

As someone with both visible and invisible disabilities, I bring lived experience that deepens my commitment to accessibility and representation. In my spare time, I run Boberta’s Dragon’s Reptile Rescue—a small, independent rescue for reptiles in need.
