Sandy Bay First Nation residents will be taking action to highlight the problems facing aboriginal people on Saturday, December 15 by shutting down part of the Trans-Canada Highway.
Vehicles will be parked on the Trans-Canada near Highway 16 to block traffic as part of the cross-Canada Idle No More protests. It’s expected that more than 200 residents of Sandy Bay – who are MGEU members – will attend the event that takes place between 10 am and 5 pm on Saturday.
The Sandy Bay First Nation has indicated to media outlets that the plan is to use vehicles to stop traffic on the highway. Nothing will be allowed to pass.
The Idle No More movement is aimed at Prime Minister Stephen Harper and more particularly the federal government’s inaction on aboriginal land and treaty rights issues.
The RCMP have indicated that they will inform media outlets if the blockade happens.
